What should I look for when interviewing contractors? The obvious points to check are license(s), insurance coverage, real experience and references. However, be sure to ask behavioral questions of both the contractor and his/her references to reveal past performance in similar situations as these responses are predictors of future performance and whether or not the contractor is principled. Examples of behavioral questions are:
Tell me about a time when you went above and beyond the call of duty in order to get a job done.
How do you schedule and prioritize your tasks?
How do you typically handle change requests?
How well did the contractor communicate with you and interact with your neighbors?
Were there clear lines of responsibilities for every detail (i.e. who selects and/or purchases fixtures?, etc.)
